Introduction:
Aim of the project is to find an alternative solution to the killing of one day old chicks. Approximately 30 million day old male layer chicks are killed in the Netherlands every year. We are working on in-ovo egg sexing at day zero without incubation. We are studying the coorelation between ceratin metabolites in the egg yolk and sex of the egg at day zero. Male eggs can be identified in this way and thus will not be incubated. Secodly we are studying the ways for inducing the female sex ratio bias in laying hens. Apart from being profitable for the industry, producing more females will consquently lead to less production of males that will reduce the number of day old male chicks.
