Introduction:
The key objective of the project is to obtain reliable quantitative data on prevalence, risk factors and population dynamics of MRSA in Dutch livestock, with emphasis on pigs. In pigs detailed studies will be performed to (1) estimate the prevalence of MRSA on different kinds of pig farms, (2) quantify risk factors for the introduction and persistence of MRSA on these farms and the complete pig production chain and (3) test intervention methods in experimental settings and under field conditions. Cattle and poultry will be screened on slaughterhouses to determine the prevalence of MRSA in these populations. Implications for transmission to humans will be included.
