Introduction:
This research project studies the indirect transmission of infectious agents between spatially separated hosts, through a combination of experimental and mathematical modelling work. The ultimate objective is to obtain a better understanding of the phenomenon of neighbourhood transmission and the potential of different biosecurity measures in curbing this transmission. Neighbourhood transmission is responsible for the majority of between-farm transmission observed in recent major epidemics of FMD, CSF and AI, and is supposed to be mainly due to indirect transmission. A model system for indirect transmission over a distance is used that is accessible to experimental study.
